GenAnimatEd is an animation series that introduces you to the world of Human Genetics. Created for the Portuguese National Institute of Health, as a Human Genetics Literacy tool. Find this episode here: https://youtu.be/5IXBgokUBBM
This episode covers the aim of Human Genetics. Traits. Genes. Inheritance. Impact on health of present and future generations. The multiple levels at which we study Human Genetics and the different approaches. Find this episode here: https://youtu.be/MDMXcc-a53A
If the human body was a country how would it be organized? And its cells? What would this mean for the genes that are inside the cells? This episode will take you on a journey the discover the amazing world of human cells and their genes. Find this episode here: https://youtu.be/MMqDCbkZF7k
How is DNA contained in the cell nucleus? What is its shape? What are chromosomes and how are they studied? Have you ever heard of Clinical Cytogenetics? Meet the 23 guardians of the galaxy of genes. (episode in Portuguese) Find this episode here: https://youtu.be/jZ0itxI4I1E
Do you know that the information that makes us human is contained inside our cells? Like secret files specific to each one of us but that are 99,9% identical in all human beings. These files are written in an ACGT code that makes up our DNA! (episode in Portuguese) Find this episode here: https://youtu.be/xC0cITs99bU
Do you know how information on DNA is read and understood by the cell? Through RNA! RNA reads, interprets and translates DNA information so that the cell knows what to do and to work. It can also be produced in a lab to provide treatment or vaccines for several diseases like COVID-19. Follow this animation to know more. Have you ever wondered how the human body is built? And what is the result of the information on our genes? Proteins! Do you know what a protein is? This episode introduces you to the world of proteins, how are they studied. Their impact on human health is shown using the example of a research project on sleep apnea. (episode in Portuguese) Find this episode here: https://youtu.be/5F0qk-miZ5E
What is a rare disease? Is it always a genetic disease? How is a rare disease diagnosis made? Are there any treatments? (Episode in Portuguese) You can find this episode here: https://youtu.be/becopNmwnIc
Video created for the research project "Neurological disease modeling for Sanfilippo: a key step towards understanding and treating a rare genetic disorder" (PI: Francisca Coutinho, from Sandra Alves Lab, INSA-Porto). In this project, stem cells from dental pulp of baby teeth were collected and applied as cell models for a rare disease (Sanfilippo's disease). Novel RNA-based therapies are being tested to address this lysosomal storage disease that starts in early infancy and affects children in a similar way to Alzheimer's disease in adults. (episode in Portuguese) You can find this episode here: https://youtu.be/BFThx1HPIjM
Does human activity affect our DNA? And if so, how does that work? Do you know that the effect of materials resulting from industry, agriculture and other activities are measurable? Even tiny particles? Have you ever heard of biomarkers? This episode introduces you to the world of Genetic Toxicology where the impact of our own activity on our health is monitored. (episode in Portuguese) You can find this episode here: https://youtu.be/2i7WXjhdqE8
Video created for the European Researchers Night 2022. The event motto was "Diversity, Inclusion, and Sustainability". The animation shows a new perspective on our genome. How the 99.9% of it are shared by all human beings - an example of inclusion. And the 0.1% that is different makes each and everyone unique - diversity at its best. (episode in Portuguese) You can find this episode here: https://youtu.be/bk2nCHHbXW4
Video created for the International Science Festival (FIC.A2022) in October 2022, at Oeiras, Portugal. In this animation you'll see how human digestion allows us to process both important nutrients and harmful contaminants. You'll also get to know how this is studied in different research projects by labs of the Food and Nutrition Department at INSA. (episode in Portuguese) You can find this episode here: https://youtu.be/kIzoBjRuDCc
Video created for the International Science Festival (FIC.A2022) in October 2022, at Oeiras, Portugal. Discussions on DNA usually address specific characteristics. There is much more about DNA than that. Our health, susceptibility to disease, potential reaction to treatments. All this may be impacted. You can know more in this animation. (episode in Portuguese) You can find this episode here: https://youtu.be/e8F_eAK0JTs
